In a surprising turn of events, FIFA has decided to waive the one-game suspensions for Argentina's Nicolas Otamendi and Ecuador's Moises Caicedo, allowing both players to participate in the upcoming World Cup without penalty. The decision, announced on Friday, stems from an unprecedented amnesty on disciplinary actions from World Cup qualifiers, orchestrated by the FIFA Bureau—a panel led by FIFA President Gianni Infantino and the heads of the six continental soccer federations.
This move ensures that teams can field their strongest lineups on the world's biggest stage. As FIFA stated, "Single yellow cards and pending one- or two-match suspensions are not carried over to the final competition," emphasizing the goal of allowing teams to compete with their most powerful squads.
The ruling follows a similar decision regarding Cristiano Ronaldo, who avoided missing World Cup games after a red card for elbowing an Ireland opponent in Portugal's qualifier last November. The remaining two games of Ronaldo's three-match ban were deferred to a probation period.
Both Otamendi and Caicedo received red cards during Ecuador's 1-0 victory over Argentina in September. Otamendi was sent off for a direct red card after fouling an attacker on a clear goal-scoring opportunity, while Caicedo earned a second yellow card for a hard tackle. Their mandatory one-game bans will now be served in other competitions after the World Cup.
Argentina, the defending champions, will kick off their World Cup campaign against Algeria on June 16 in Kansas City. Meanwhile, Ecuador faces Ivory Coast on June 14 in Philadelphia. With these suspensions lifted, both teams can now count on key players to bolster their chances in the tournament.
