FIFA announced names of largest officiating crew in World Cup history, with 52 referees, 88 assistant referees, and 30 video match officials.

Get ready for the biggest stage in world football! FIFA has just unveiled its officiating crew for the 2026 World Cup, and it's a historic group. To manage the expanded 48-team, 104-match tournament, the governing body has assembled its largest-ever pool of match officials, signaling a new era for the beautiful game.

Dubbed "FIFA Team One," this elite squad consists of 52 referees, 88 assistant referees, and 30 video match officials. That's a staggering 170 officials in total, a massive increase of 41 from the crew that managed the 2022 tournament in Qatar. The scale matches the ambition of the 2026 event, which will be hosted across North America in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

This truly global team was selected from all six continental confederations and 50 different national associations, with eight officials hailing from the host United States. In a significant step for inclusivity, six of the selected match officials are women, building on the progress made in Qatar. FIFA's Chief Refereeing Officer, the legendary Pierluigi Collina, emphasized that this group represents "the very best in the world," chosen after a rigorous three-year monitoring and assessment process of their performances in both domestic and international competitions.

Collina also highlighted the comprehensive support system in place, noting that officials will receive fitness, medical, and even mental health support to ensure they are in peak condition when they arrive for their pre-tournament camp in Miami. With the tournament's vast geographical footprint and record number of games, precision and consistency from the officials will be more critical than ever.

To meet this challenge, Team One will be equipped with the latest technology, including advanced goal-line systems and semi-automated offside technology, ensuring every crucial call is as accurate as possible. As the football world counts down to 2026, the stage is being set not just for the players, but for the largest and most prepared team of officials ever to take the field.
