New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill accuses Fifa of failing to provide funding, which means fans must foot the bill for high transport costs at the World Cup this summer.

World Cup fever is building, but for fans heading to the biggest matches in New Jersey, the journey to the stadium is shaping up to be a costly part of the experience. New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill has placed the blame squarely on FIFA, accusing the global football body of failing to provide promised funding for transportation, leaving fans to face a staggering price hike.

The issue centers on travel to MetLife Stadium—renamed New York/New Jersey Stadium for the tournament—which will host eight matches, including a high-profile England group game and the final on July 19th. According to reports, a special event pricing model could see the usual $12.90 round-trip train fare from New York's Penn Station skyrocket to over $100 for the 30-minute journey, with no discounts for children or seniors.

This follows a similar pattern near Boston, where transport costs to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough were also massively increased. Governor Sherrill argues that with FIFA projected to make billions from the tournament, it's unreasonable to expect local taxpayers or daily commuters to subsidize the transportation of fans. "FIFA should pay for the rides," she stated, emphasizing her stance against passing a multi-million dollar bill to New Jersey residents.

In response, a FIFA spokesperson expressed surprise at the governor's comments, maintaining that their agreements aim for fan travel "at cost" and pointing out that such surge pricing isn't typical for other major events at the venue. With official pricing expected to be confirmed soon, this clash highlights the often-overlooked logistical and financial challenges that come with hosting a mega-event, impacting the very fans who create its atmosphere. For supporters budgeting for the tournament, the cost of getting to the game is now a critical part of the play.
