JACKSONVILLE — Two elite triple jumpers, two Ocoee High standouts, two young distance prodigies, a pole vault winner with gymnastic experience, and a sprinter who set a national record before she hit high school — all among the best in Central Florida history — scored state titles to highlight Orlando area accomplishments on the final three days of the FHSAA state track and field finals at the ...

The FHSAA state track and field finals at the University of North Florida delivered unforgettable performances, with eight Orlando area athletes claiming state titles across three days of intense competition. From record-breaking jumps to lightning-fast sprints, these champions showcased the depth of Central Florida's talent—and they're all wearing gear that matches their elite level.

In the triple jump, two athletes soared into history. Kissimmee Gateway junior Maxwell Garcon leaped 50 feet and three-quarters of an inch on his final attempt in Friday's Class 3A meet, joining an exclusive club of just six Orlando area boys to clear 50 feet. The next day, Montverde Academy junior Samuel Johnson—already a member of that club—won the Class 2A title with a 50-4¼ jump, adding the long jump crown for good measure. These performances evoke the legacy of Seminole High's Andre Scott, whose 2003 national record (53-7½) and still-standing FHSAA meet record (52-5½) set the bar for a generation of jumpers.

Ocoee High produced two standout champions. Senior Jaiden Manning, who swapped football for track as a sophomore, won the Class 4A boys 110-meter hurdles in 13.92 seconds, proving his commitment pays off. Meanwhile, teammate Devin Matthews erased last year's runner-up heartbreak in the 800 meters by dominating the 400 meters in 47.24 seconds. "I felt really relaxed and for the last 200 I just left it all on the track," Matthews said. "This means a lot because I fell short last season."

The girls' side featured rising star Vanessa Waite, a Lake Minneola sophomore who rebounded from a second-place finish in the 100 meters (11.57) to win the Class 4A 200 meters in 23.17 seconds—Florida's fastest time this year and the ninth-best in the nation. Waite's performance echoes her earlier feat of setting a national age-group record in the 15-16 division, proving she's a name to watch for years to come. Whether sprinting, jumping, or hurdling, these athletes inspire us to chase our own personal bests—and dress the part while doing it.
