The 2026 NFL Draft got off to a hot start on Thursday night, and as just about everyone expected, the Las Vegas Raiders selected Heisman Trophy winner and national champion quarterback Fernando Mendoza with the first overall pick in the draft.
Mendoza going with the top pick was absolutely no surprise, but when interviewed immediately after being selected at the event, he seemed genuinely excited about landing in Las Vegas.
"I'm ecstatic for the opportunity," Mendoza said.

During a featured segment during draft night, Mendoza also made sure to use his limited time on the biggest night of his career to praise his family for their support along the way โ Mendoza skipped over attending in person due to his mother's health issues, and opted to celebrate at home with his family instead.
"My family's unconditional love and belief has pushed me forward," he said.
Mendoza passed for 3,535 yards, 41 touchdowns, and six interceptions last year during his only season with the Indiana Hoosiers, leading the program to a Big 10 Championship, as well as their first-ever national championship.
