In a stunning display of pitching dominance, Michael Fernandez led Plymouth Christian Academy to a statement victory over No. 5-ranked Dearborn Divine Child, securing a 12-2 mercy-rule win on May 15. The senior right-hander was so efficient that even the umpire took notice, shaking his hand after the game and quipping, "You got me outta here fast enough so I can go watch the Pistons game."

Fernandez, a University of South Carolina-Sumter commit, was in complete control from the first pitch. He struck out seven batters, walked four, and surrendered just two hits over the course of the game. What made the performance even more impressive was his ability to escape trouble. In the second inning, after putting two runners in scoring position, he calmly struck out the next three batters to end the threat. Later, in the fourth, he loaded the bases but allowed only one run on a single by Divine Child's Andre Davis. The Falcons' only other run came on a passed ball in the fifth.

"He's just a workhorse for us, but he's been doing that the last three years that he's been here," said Eagles coach Eero Perkola, whose team improved to 20-6 on the season. "Mechanically, he's just using his lower half more. He's commanding the zone this season."

Fernandez entered the matchup with an impressive stat line: 25 1/3 innings pitched, only three earned runs allowed, and 29 strikeouts. Much of that work has come against tough competition, making his performance against the Falcons—who he touched 89 mph against—even more noteworthy. The senior credited his teammates for giving him the confidence to pitch through jams. "I trust my guys on the field, and that's really important to me, just knowing that if I get a groundball or anything, they're going to pick me up," he said. "It's a great feeling, and it fires up the boys."

The victory was capped by Carter Dattillio's walk-off single to left field, sealing the upset and sending the Eagles back to the locker room with a signature win. For fans of Plymouth Christian baseball, this is a team that's clearly built for a deep postseason run—and Fernandez is leading the charge from the mound.
