In a stunning display of endurance and grit, fell runner Kim Collison has shattered a legendary record that stood for four decades—a 103-mile (167km) journey through the heart of the Lake District. The 45-year-old athlete completed the grueling "Lakes, Meres and Waters" route on Monday in an incredible time of 18 hours, 50 minutes, and 34 seconds, besting the previous record of 19 hours and 14 minutes set by the iconic Joss Naylor back in 1983.

Known as the "King of the Fells," Naylor was a titan in the fell-running community, and his mark had remained untouched for 40 years. But Collison, a Lake District local, rose to the challenge, linking up 26 lakes, meres, and waters while tackling over 6,500 meters (21,325 feet) of ascent. The route, which allows runners to choose their own path, offers a unique perspective on the landscape. "Most routes link the fell tops, but this one takes you through the lower valleys you don't normally run on. It's a different view entirely," Collison explained.

The journey was a rollercoaster of emotions. "I went from being in a pain cave to pure elation," Collison said, describing the mental and physical toll. "The toughest bits are when you're 8km (5 miles) in and everything is suffering. It's the mental game of keeping it going." But one moment stood out: passing Naylor's old house in Greendale, Wasdale. "That was a real high point—running through bluebells and lovely woodland by his home," he recalled.

Collison credited his success to an incredible support team, including "some amazing runners" and the unwavering support of his wife. "I couldn't have done it without them," he said. While the route is a "phenomenal run," he admits it's not for the faint of heart. "I can see why nobody else has tried to chase it in all these years."

For those inspired by this feat, it's a reminder that the right gear—whether for trail running, fell racing, or simply exploring the outdoors—can make all the difference. As Collison showed, with determination and the right support, even the toughest records can fall.
