Felix Rosenqvist took advantage of the friendly, late afternoon weather conditions to reach the top of the Indianapolis 500 speed charts on Fast Friday. Scott McLaughlin needed just seven laps in the middle of the afternoon to send his message on Indianapolis Motor Speedway's iconic 2.5-mile oval — Team Penske intends to reclaim the pole. Rosenqvist posted the fastest lap of the day, 233.372 mph though it came with a tow, and the fastest four-lap average, 232.828 in the final practice before qualifying.

INDIANAPOLIS — The final tune-up before Indianapolis 500 qualifying delivered exactly the kind of drama fans crave, as Felix Rosenqvist and Scott McLaughlin traded blows at the top of the speed charts on Fast Friday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Rosenqvist capitalized on ideal late-afternoon conditions to post the day's fastest lap at 233.372 mph and the quickest four-lap average of 232.828 mph in the final practice session before qualifying. While those numbers came with the benefit of a tow, the Swedish driver sent a clear message that Meyer Shank Racing is ready to contend for the front row.

But it was McLaughlin who stole the spotlight after a two-hour rain delay tested everyone's patience. The Team Penske driver needed just seven laps in the middle of the afternoon to make his statement on the iconic 2.5-mile oval. His 232.674 mph no-tow lap was the fastest of the week without drafting help, and his four-lap average of 232.572 mph was second only to Rosenqvist.

"It was better than going upside down — that was the last time I was here on this boost level," McLaughlin said with a grin, referencing his crash at the track last year. "We've got a really good test point for the team, and we'll go back and scratch our heads a little more. But it's just going to get harder as the weekend goes on."

The New Zealander, who won the Indy 500 pole in 2024, is clearly aiming to reclaim that top spot for Team Penske. His teammates — two-time Indy winner Josef Newgarden and last year's runner-up David Malukas — logged the fewest laps of any team after IndyCar officials gave drivers an additional 100 horsepower boost, suggesting Penske's cars are already dialed in.

Alexander Rossi was the only other driver to eclipse McLaughlin's speed, posting a 232.93 mph lap. Both Rossi and McLaughlin had to change engines earlier this week due to mechanical issues, making their performances even more impressive.

With rain threatening Saturday's qualifying session, the 33 drivers vying for a spot in the May 24 race know the conditions could shift dramatically. If the skies stay dry for the final three hours of qualifying, the weather could mirror what teams experienced on Fast Friday — setting the stage for an unforgettable battle between McLaughlin, Rosenqvist, and the rest of the field.
