FC Köln are weighing up a permanent move for Manchester City's promising young defender, Jahmai Simpson-Pusey, with a reported €8 million deal on the table.
The 20-year-old centre-back joined the Bundesliga outfit on loan in January for the remainder of the season, and his performances have clearly caught the eye. Should Köln trigger the purchase option, City are set to include a buy-back clause—a savvy move that protects their investment in a homegrown talent.
Simpson-Pusey is a true product of the Manchester City academy, having joined the club's U9s back in 2013. His pedigree is impressive: he captained the U18 side to FA Youth Cup glory in 2024, leading them to a dominant 4-0 victory over Leeds United in the final. After climbing the ranks, he made his senior debut for Pep Guardiola's side in October 2024, coming off the bench in a 2-1 Carabao Cup defeat to Tottenham.
During the 2024-25 season, the young defender made six appearances across all competitions for City and also captained the Elite Development Squad (EDS) to a Premier League 2 title. His individual brilliance was recognised when he became the first defender ever to be named Premier League 2 Player of the Season—a testament to his leadership and defensive prowess.
However, not all loan moves go to plan. Simpson-Pusey's stint at Celtic in the 2025-26 season was a challenging one. He managed just two appearances for the Hoops' first team, totalling only 64 minutes on the pitch, with his first outing coming for the B team in October 2025. That experience was cut short, paving the way for his mid-season switch to Köln.
In Germany, the Englishman has found his feet. He has started nine of his 10 Bundesliga appearances so far, showing resilience after setbacks including a muscle injury, a red card suspension, and a period of special leave. For a player who has faced adversity early in his career, this loan spell is proving to be a vital stepping stone—and possibly the launchpad for a permanent move to the Bundesliga.
