Father Ryan baseball coach Mike Mascari will retire from coaching the Irish after 18 seasons, the school announced on April 28.

Mascari, a 1996 Father Ryan graduate, compiled more than 250 wins, a region title in 2014 and a TSSAA baseball state tournament berth in 2019.

“It has truly been an honor to work with these young men and to be part of this program,” Mascari said in a release. “I am incredibly grateful for the trust our families have placed in me and for the support they have given along the way. Coaching has been a privilege, and I am proud of the growth, effort, and character all my players have shown.”

Mascari and Father Ryan (16-13) begin the Division II-AA Middle Region tournament against MBA on April 29.

Among the Division I players Mascari has coached at Father Ryan is Vanderbilt sophomore left-handed pitcher Matthew Shorey.

Mascari played four years for Father Ryan from 1993-96, helping lead the program to its first regional tournament appearance in 11 seasons. He was a two-year starter at Christian Brothers University and spent one season as a graduate assistant there before returning to Father Ryan in 2008.

“I have had the privilege of experiencing Mike both as a student and faculty member at Father Ryan for over 20 years. Beyond his dedication to forming young men on and off the field, he has spent the last two decades helping our students reach their spiritual, academic, and personal potential,” Father Ryan president Paul Davis said.

Father Ryan athletic director Ann Mullins said the search for a new coach has already begun.

“Coach Mascari has dedicated many years to Father Ryan Baseball, and his commitment to our student-athletes and the growth of the program has been truly meaningful,” Mullins said. “We are grateful for the time, energy, and passion he has poured into the young men he has coached and mentored over the years.”
