Fantasy Premier League is back, and we're diving straight into the most critical phase of the season: the strategic minefield of double and blank gameweeks. Your chip strategy over the coming weeks could define your entire campaign.
While some managers have already deployed their chips, many have wisely saved their Wildcard, Free Hit, and Bench Boost for this decisive period. The schedule is about to get chaotic, starting with Gameweek 33, where six teams—Brighton, Bournemouth, Burnley, Chelsea, Leeds United, and Manchester City—will play twice. Crucially, these same sides will blank entirely in GW34.
Further doubles are likely in GW36 and possibly GW37, depending on cup results. This condensed fixture schedule makes your chip timing more important than ever. So, what's the optimal play?
One popular strategy, if you still hold all your chips, is to play the Wildcard now (GW32) to load up on players from the six doubling teams. You would then activate the Bench Boost in GW33 to get points from all 15 players, followed by a Free Hit in GW34 to navigate the blank gameweek seamlessly.
However, this approach has risks. You might be forced to sell in-form, season-long assets like the prolific forward Igor Thiago. It also concentrates your team heavily on just a few clubs, including a direct clash between Manchester City and Chelsea. Furthermore, you'd be sidelining key players from top sides like Arsenal, Liverpool, and Newcastle, who have excellent fixtures after the doubles.
A potentially safer alternative is to use your Free Hit in GW33 to temporarily bring in a full squad of doublers. This allows you to preserve your current team's structure. You can then play your Wildcard in GW35 to build a powerhouse squad perfectly set up for the potential doubles in GW36 and 37, setting the stage for a massive Bench Boost.
This second strategy works exceptionally well if you already have a strong core of players from teams with good long-term fixtures. It allows for a more balanced build-up to the season's climax without sacrificing your team's foundation for a single gameweek. Choose the path that best fits your squad and risk tolerance—your mini-league title could depend on it.
