The Miami Marlins are shaking up their rotation, and fantasy baseball managers should be paying close attention. After designating Chris Paddack for assignment following a rough 7.63 ERA over seven starts, the team has a clear opening—and top prospect Robby Snelling appears poised to fill it.
For weeks, many assumed veteran Braxton Garrett would get the call given his experience and 40-man roster status. But the Marlins sent a strong signal by having Garrett make his regular Triple-A start on Tuesday, throwing 80 pitches across five innings. That makes it highly unlikely he'll step into Paddack's vacated spot on Friday.
Enter Robby Snelling. The left-handed phenom has been dominant at Triple-A, posting a 1.46 ERA with 132 strikeouts over 98.2 innings across 18 career starts at that level. He's coming off a no-hit outing in his most recent start and has racked up at least nine strikeouts in three of his last five appearances. While occasional control issues have popped up, his raw talent is undeniable—and his schedule lines up perfectly for Friday's start.
Of course, the Marlins could turn to other options like Ryan Gusto or Bradley Blalock, both of whom have MLB experience. Blalock, in particular, has impressed with a strong start to the season and a 12-strikeout performance in his latest outing. But Snelling is arguably the team's top pitching prospect and one of the best left-handed arms in the minors. With the Marlins showing a willingness to compete—evidenced by their decision to eat the remainder of Paddack's $4 million contract—it's hard to find a baseball reason not to give Snelling the ball.
For fantasy managers, this is a name to watch closely. If Snelling gets the call, he could provide immediate strikeout upside and a boost to any rotation. Stay tuned for official word, but all signs point to a potential debut that could reshape the waiver wire landscape.
