The Professional Women's Hockey League is taking a major step forward, and for Detroit hockey fans, the wait is finally over. On Wednesday, the PWHL officially announced it is expanding to Detroit, adding a ninth franchise that will begin play in the 2026-2027 season at Little Caesars Arena—home to the NHL's Red Wings and NBA's Pistons. This move comes amid unprecedented growth for the league, and it's a direct response to the passion and persistence of Motor City fans.
"This market is ready for its own team. The fans told us so," said Amy Scheer, PWHL executive vice president of business operations. "We are so proud to permanently join 'Hockeytown' with the introduction of PWHL Detroit." To give fans an early taste of the action, the 2026 PWHL Draft will be hosted at the historic Fox Theatre in Detroit on June 17. "It's an early chance to get involved and to watch your team be built," Scheer added.
Detroit's relationship with the PWHL has been building for years. The city hosted four games during the league's annual Takeover Tour, dating back to the first neutral-site game on March 16, 2024, which drew 13,736 fans. That support only grew stronger—Detroit hosted more Takeover Tour games than any other neutral city, with the most recent matchup on March 28 pulling in 15,938 fans. Jayna Hefford, executive vice president of hockey operations, reflected on that journey: "In Year 1, we read signs that said, 'We want a team.' In Year 2, we read signs that said, 'We deserve a team.' And in Year 3, we read signs that said, 'We've earned a team.' Well, you were right. This team is now yours."
The expansion franchise will sport black and silver as primary colors, with white and red as secondary accents. The team name and logo are yet to be revealed, but one thing is clear: Detroit's hockey faithful have earned their place in the PWHL. Whether you're gearing up for game day or just celebrating the moment, this is a historic win for the city and the sport.
