A frightening incident at Guaranteed Rate Field briefly halted Wednesday night's game between the Chicago White Sox and Kansas City Royals, as a fan fell over a railing and into the visiting team's bullpen. The fan was later hospitalized, according to the Associated Press.
The incident occurred during the fourth inning, with the Royals having runners on first and second and no outs. Suddenly, attention shifted from the action on the field to the outfield, where the fan had fallen from the stands. Stadium workers quickly responded, and the game was paused as they carefully placed the fan on a stretcher and moved them off the field.
Royals pitcher Nick Mears, who was in the bullpen at the time, said he didn't see the fall happen. "From what I've heard, the fan was kind of standing up on the edge of the bullpen and kind of just went over, and then I saw him lying there," Mears told reporters.
Mears and the other Royals pitchers moved to the opposite side of the bullpen to give medical personnel space to work. "Baseball's just a game when it comes to that stuff in my mind," Mears said. "Obviously human lives are something different. Kind of just creating space for all of the people to come in and try to help him out. Just trying to make sure that he had the best care that he could get in that moment was kind of our priority."
Another fan, Zach Kreigler, told the Kansas City Star that the fall may have happened moments earlier, at the end of the third inning, after the White Sox scored a run. "He jumped up to celebrate and fell over," Kreigler said. "He just got excited and flipped over. I've never seen anything like that in my life. I just hope he's okay."
The incident comes almost exactly one year after a Pittsburgh Pirates fan fell 21 feet from the stands at PNC Park, suffering severe injuries including a broken back and neck, a punctured lung, and broken ribs. While fan safety at ballparks is always a priority, these rare but serious accidents serve as a stark reminder that even in the excitement of a game, staying aware of your surroundings is crucial.
