The Atlanta Falcons are heading into the 2026 season with one of the NFL's most intriguing storylines: a full-blown quarterback competition that has fans and analysts buzzing. According to Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon, this battle ranks among the league's biggest unanswered questions for the upcoming campaign.

After former general manager Terry Fontenot was shown the door—partly due to the fallout from the Kirk Cousins contract saga—the new front office is taking a radically different approach. Instead of handing the starting job to a single player, they're letting a legitimate offseason competition decide who leads the offense.

On one side, you have Michael Penix Jr., the team's top-10 overall draft pick from 2024. He's the safe bet to win the job, given the significant investment the Falcons have made in him. On the other, there's Tua Tagovailoa, a former Dolphins starter who signed a one-year, $1.2 million deal with Atlanta. While Tagovailoa's contract is a fraction of Penix's, his NFL ceiling has been higher—and he's expected to be healthier when Week 1 rolls around.

Gagnon notes that Tagovailoa likely has an early advantage, simply because Penix is recovering from a major knee injury. "The Falcons are pitting former Dolphins starter Tua Tagovailoa, coming off a brutal exit from Miami, against underwhelming 2024 first-rounder Michael Penix Jr.," he writes.

The most likely scenario? A two-pronged approach. Our best guess is that Tagovailoa will start the regular season under center, but once Penix is fully healthy, Tua will need to impress in a big way to hold him off. Given the circumstances, it's more than likely we'll see both quarterbacks start at least five games during the regular season. This battle might not be fully settled until January—or even beyond.
