Atlanta has set itself up to make a change.

The Atlanta Falcons might be making a big change in their secondary sooner than expected. Just one year after signing cornerback Mike Hughes to a three-year, $18 million contract extension, the team appears ready to hand his job over to a rookie.

That rookie is Avieon Terrell, a Clemson product and the younger brother of current Falcons star corner A.J. Terrell. When Atlanta used a top-50 pick on Terrell in the 2026 NFL Draft, it sent a clear message about their intentions at the position.

ESPN's Ben Solak noted the significance of the selection. "Terrell was the earliest pick the Falcons had in the 2026 draft, and they had other more pressing needs on the table," Solak wrote. "This isn't some Round 4 toolsy prospect. This was a top-50 pick with already a ton of internal buy-in given his family name. I won't be surprised when Terrell and Hughes are rotating first-team snaps in camp."

The good news for Hughes? In today's NFL, teams need more than just two starting-caliber cornerbacks. With the league's pass-heavy offenses, quality depth is essential. Hughes can still expect solid playing time, and Atlanta likely won't rush Terrell into a full-time role right away given his inexperience.

But make no mistake—the rookie will be lurking. If Hughes struggles or suffers another injury like the one that sidelined him in 2025, his starting spot could vanish quickly. NFL teams can't afford to wait forever, especially when a younger, cheaper option is waiting in the wings.

For Hughes, the challenge is clear: prove he belongs on the field, or watch the Falcons hand the keys to the next generation.
