The Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) found themselves under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons during their IPL 2026 clash against the Chennai Super Kings at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium on Sunday. What should have been a routine match quickly turned into a social media storm after a brief broadcast moment sparked allegations of a possible protocol breach.
The incident unfolded in the very first over of the match, right after Josh Inglis smashed a boundary off Akeal Hossein on the fifth delivery. As the television broadcast replayed the action, eagle-eyed viewers spotted someone in the LSG dugout area appearing to use a mobile phone. The footage spread like wildfire across social media, with fans and analysts alike questioning whether the team had violated the IPL's strict Player and Match Officials Area (PMOA) regulations.
For context, the IPL's PMOA guidelines are crystal clear: "Mobile phones and other electronic communication devices are not allowed to be used in the PMOA." These rules apply across all key operational zones, including dressing rooms, dugouts, match viewing areas, umpire rooms, the match referee's room, and dining spaces. Only the official team analyst is permitted to use such devices, and only from a designated area. It's a rule designed to maintain the integrity of the game and prevent any unauthorized communication.
However, as the clip continued to circulate, the situation took a turn. It emerged that the individual caught on camera may not have actually been part of the LSG dugout at all. The exact location of the person could not be independently verified, leaving the matter unresolved for now. This wasn't the first time such an issue has cropped up this season. Earlier, Rajasthan Royals team manager Romi Bhinder faced scrutiny after being seen using a mobile phone during a match against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in Guwahati, with images of him alongside Vaibhav Sooryavanshi doing the rounds on social media.
For now, the LSG camp can breathe easy, but the incident serves as a timely reminder for all teams: in the high-stakes world of the IPL, even the smallest off-field moment can become a major talking point.
