The FA will review referee Andrew Madley's report of Southampton's play-off victory against Middlesbrough after an incident between Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Luke Ayling.

The Football Association is set to review referee Andrew Madley's match report following a heated incident during Southampton's Championship play-off semi-final second leg against Middlesbrough. The flashpoint involved Saints defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Boro's Luke Ayling, with tensions boiling over just before half-time.

Southampton secured their spot in the play-off final with a dramatic 2-1 aggregate victory, courtesy of Shea Charles' extra-time winner. However, the match was overshadowed by a verbal altercation between the two defenders, which prompted Madley to intervene and speak with both players. Reports emerged during the break that Harwood-Bellis was alleged to have made a discriminatory comment, though no official confirmation has been provided.

The referee then held sideline discussions with both managers, Tonda Eckert (Southampton) and Kim Hellberg (Middlesbrough), before play resumed. Eckert reacted visibly frustrated during the exchange, needing to be physically restrained by the referee and fourth official as emotions ran high. The confrontation between the two coaches added to the already intense atmosphere of a high-stakes play-off clash.

Speaking after the match, Hellberg remained guarded about the incident. "I don't think this is my place to say," he told the media. "On the pitch things happen and it's not my role to explain in terms of that, it's better that the people involved do that. I think [Eckert's aggression] was in the heat of the moment, and feelings and emotions are things we love about football. I don't know exactly about that situation, but Luke is of course devastated we have not gone through."

Eckert, still processing the events, noted that the two players had spoken after the final whistle. "I don't have an understanding of the situation yet," he admitted in his post-match press conference. "But I have seen that the two of them spoke straight after the game and there was obviously a lot of emotions, but they seemed fine — so I need to check with him [Harwood-Bellis] what happened exactly."

As Southampton prepare for the play-off final at Wembley, the FA's review could have implications for Harwood-Bellis, depending on the findings. For now, the focus remains on the pitch, where Charles' winner sealed a dramatic victory that keeps Saints' promotion hopes alive.
