The Football Association has revealed the exact eight-word outburst from Manchester United's Harry Maguire that landed him an additional suspension, compounding a frustrating season for the defender.

Maguire will now miss Manchester United's crucial Premier League clash against Chelsea this Saturday. This extra one-match ban stems from an incident following his red card against Bournemouth on March 20th, where he was dismissed for a last-man challenge on Evanilson that conceded a penalty.

The FA charged Maguire with improper conduct for comments allegedly made to fourth official Matt Donohue as he left the pitch. After a lengthy 25-day review, the governing body has handed down its verdict, which includes the ban and a £30,000 fine.

According to the FA's full written reasons, fourth official Donohue reported that Maguire approached him after the VAR check and shouted, "You’re a joke. You’re all a f—ing joke." This allegation formed the basis of the charge for using "abusive and/or insulting words" towards a match official.

In his defense, Maguire admitted to the charge but contested the specifics. He stated that while he said something "along the lines of 'it is a f—ing joke'," he is certain he did not direct the insult at any official personally. Manchester United supported his account with a witness statement from substitute Joshua Zirkzee, who was warming up nearby during the exchange.

This episode highlights the fine line players walk in the heat of the moment and serves as a stark reminder of the FA's stance on referee respect. For Maguire, it means an untimely absence as United look to solidify their league position in the final stretch of the season.
