Ciryl Gane isn't backing down from his fighting style, even after his last bout ended in controversy. The French heavyweight insists he won't change a thing, following the eye pokes that marred his clash with Tom Aspinall in Abu Dhabi last October.
While Gane has a massive showdown against Alex Pereira on the horizon—yes, at the White House—fans and fighters alike can't stop talking about that Aspinall fight. And it's not the first time Gane's faced accusations of dirty tactics. But for "Bon Gamin," it's all part of the game.
"No, unfortunately this happens at like every event," Gane told New York Post Sports. "This is not something special. So, unfortunately, I landed my middle kick and when you land your middle kick, you land also the hands and he came in front of me and the first thing coming to me was his face. So I tried to push his face, my fingers just swiped down his eye. This is MMA."
Gane suggests Aspinall made more of the injuries than they really were. Aspinall, for his part, has labeled Gane a dirty fighter and is hungry for a rematch once he returns from injury. Even though heavyweights like Daniel Cormier have pushed back on those claims, it took Gane a while to publicly address the situation.
When he finally did, he didn't hold back—but he also didn't throw direct shade. "I said just after the fight, we are not in the eyes of Tom Aspinall so we can't judge. Maybe he can't see like he said so no, I'm not judging," Gane added.
With Aspinall eyeing the interim title upon his return and Gane focused on Pereira, the heavyweight division remains as unpredictable as ever. For Gane, the message is clear: the fingers stay out, but the fighting style stays the same.
