Michigan football's annual Maize vs. Blue spring game is set for Saturday, April 18th, but fans heading to The Big House or tuning in on the Big Ten Network should temper their expectations for seeing the full roster in action. With spring practice entering its final stretch, first-year head coach Jyle Whittingham has made it clear that the scrimmage will serve a specific developmental purpose.

"The main thrust is a great chance for us to get a good, in-depth, concentrated look at the twos and threes," Whittingham stated. He confirmed that many established starters—"the ones"—will be held out of the live action. "We're not going to put a guy in there that we know what he can do... there's no reason for that. It's a chance to showcase the twos and threes in as close to a game environment as we can structure."

This strategic approach shifts the spotlight to the depth chart, offering rising talents and backups a prime opportunity to compete under the lights and make their case for fall playing time. Alongside the adjusted personnel plan, Whittingham is also implementing a new team selection format to ensure competitive balance.

Gone is the traditional player-by-player draft used under the previous staff. Instead, position coaches will first split their units into 'A' and 'B' groups. The coaches leading the Maize and Blue squads will then conduct a quick "snake draft" of these entire position units. This method, Whittingham explained, is designed to create "a team that's very evenly divided" for a more compelling and evaluative scrimmage.

While the specific star players sitting out weren't named, the message is clear: this year's spring game is less about the known commodities and more about discovering the next wave of Wolverines ready to leave their mark.
