Liverpool's hopes of bringing Xabi Alonso back to Anfield may have been dealt a significant blow—and it all comes down to one controversial decision made behind the scenes.

The Spanish midfield legend is currently available after his brief, turbulent stint at Real Madrid came to an end in January 2026. Hired as Carlo Ancelotti's successor in May 2025, Alonso's tenure lasted just 232 days. While he stormed out of the gates with 10 wins in his first 11 league matches and a memorable Clásico victory, a sharp dip in form during the winter months proved costly. His exit was sealed following a 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final, with Álvaro Arbeloa stepping in immediately.

Now, clubs are circling—and Chelsea have emerged as serious contenders. Reports from iNews suggest the Blues have made Alonso their "primary target" to replace Liam Rosenior, who was dismissed after just four months in charge. But what's really turning heads is the kind of offer Chelsea can make: one that gives Alonso the control he craves.

And that's where Liverpool's problem lies.

After parting ways with Jürgen Klopp in 2024, Liverpool restructured their hierarchy. Arne Slot was brought in as a "head coach," not a manager—a clear shift in philosophy that limits the influence a coach has over transfers and club operations. While the club has stuck by Slot through a historically poor run of form (their worst in 70 years), the patience from the stands is wearing thin. Boos rang out at Anfield during the recent defeat to Chelsea, and the pressure is mounting.

Alonso, however, has made it clear he wants more than just a coaching role. He wants to be a manager in the traditional sense—someone with a real say in recruitment and strategy. That's a model Chelsea are reportedly willing to offer, giving them a clear edge in the race for his signature.

For Liverpool, the dilemma is stark: stick with the current structure and risk losing out on a club legend, or reconsider their approach to bring Alonso back to Merseyside. As things stand, the Reds are left watching from the sidelines as their rivals make their move.
