Paulo "Borrachinha" Costa might not have walked away with a performance bonus after his win over Azamat Murzakanov at UFC 327, but the Brazilian star isn't complaining. With a résumé that spans middleweight and a current No. 7 ranking in the UFC light heavyweight division, Costa sees a golden opportunity to fight for the 205-pound interim title—especially with champion Carlos Ulberg sidelined by a serious knee injury. Adding fuel to the fire, former champion Jiri Prochazka has already called him out.
But Costa's options don't stop there. After calling out Josh Hokit for "stealing his bonus" at UFC 327—and getting a positive response from the American—a move up to heavyweight is now on the table. "I have one more fight on my UFC contract, and thank God there are plenty of options," Costa said. "I can fight in all three divisions."
When asked to choose between Hokit, Prochazka, and middleweight king Khamzat Chimaev, Costa didn't hesitate. "I have a personal rivalry with Chimaev. If he beats Sean Strickland on Saturday, it will be the biggest fight I can do right now. So, among Hokit, Jiri, and Chimaev, my choice would be Chimaev." Costa will be cageside at UFC 328, where Chimaev headlines against Strickland. "I'm going to Newark on Wednesday at the UFC's invitation. They called me to be there in the front row to promote this possible super fight. I don't have any injuries, and I'm available to the UFC to return as soon as possible."
Looking ahead to the Chimaev-Strickland matchup, Costa—who lost to Strickland via split decision—offered a tactical breakdown. "I see Chimaev starting very strong, trying to finish the fight quickly. But the longer it goes, the worse it is for him. Strickland is the opposite; he keeps the same pace until the end. I see Chimaev as the favorite in the first two rounds, but from then on, Strickland's chances of winning increase clearly."
Costa also touched on a memorable moment from after UFC 327: a greeting from U.S. President Donald J. Trump. And in classic Borrachinha fashion, he's ready for anything—even stepping in for Derrick Lewis if the heavyweight legend gets injured. From middleweight to heavyweight, Costa's next move could reshape multiple divisions.
