Manchester United's rising star between the posts, Senne Lammens, is reflecting on a debut campaign that has exceeded expectations—but the young Belgian knows his journey at Old Trafford is only just beginning.
Signed from Royal Antwerp for £18.1 million last September, Lammens arrived as a relative unknown to most fans. However, United's scouting team had long identified him as a top prospect, pushing for his signature ahead of manager Ruben Amorim's preferred choice, Emi Martinez. After initially watching from the bench as Altay Bayindir held the starting role through September, Lammens seized his opportunity when it came—and never looked back.
The 23-year-old has been a revelation, delivering composed performances that quickly silenced any doubts. His standout display against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light drew widespread praise, and until a rare error against Liverpool last weekend, he had been nearly flawless. For a goalkeeper still finding his feet in English football, that consistency is remarkable.
Lammens' rapid rise has also earned him a spot on Belgium's World Cup roster as Thibaut Courtois' deputy—a prospect that seemed unlikely just last summer. "I think I can be proud of the season I've been having," Lammens said. "I had the perfect opportunity and it was the perfect time to come into the team and grow. I had a lot to learn and still do, but in this squad, I also get the chance to show myself and help the team out."
With Manchester United climbing the table under Michael Carrick, Lammens will get his first taste of Champions League football next season. There's also hope for a stronger run in domestic cups, after a disappointing early exit to Grimsby in the EFL Cup before his arrival.
But for Lammens, this season's likely third-place finish is just a stepping stone. "It's been a very good season for me personally," he said. "As a team, we've been growing, and now it's about the next step. Next season is going to be a big one. Everyone's going to step up again because while this season was okay, it's not our end goal. We have to keep building and try to get better."
For fans of the game—and those who love a keeper with confidence and ambition—Lammens is a name to watch. His debut campaign may be just the beginning of something special at Old Trafford.
