In a twist that feels straight out of a baseball screenplay, Jonah Heim is heading back where it all began. The former All-Star catcher and 2023 World Series champion with the Texas Rangers has been picked up by the Athletics after a brief, 12-game stint with the Atlanta Braves.
Heim was designated for assignment by Atlanta on Monday when the team activated starting catcher Sean Murphy from the injured list. But before he could even test free agency, the Athletics—currently sitting atop the AL West—swooped in, acquiring Heim in exchange for cash considerations.
It's a homecoming of sorts. Heim made his major league debut with the Athletics back in 2020, when the team was still in Oakland. Now, he returns to the same division where he once shined brightest. During his five seasons with the Rangers, Heim earned an All-Star nod, a Gold Glove, and a World Series ring in 2023. However, after a challenging 2025 season, he was non-tendered and eventually signed a one-year deal with Atlanta as depth behind rookie standout Drake Baldwin.
In his short time with the Braves, Heim showed flashes of his old form, posting a .721 OPS with one home run and eight RBIs in 45 plate appearances. Now, back in familiar territory, he'll look to rediscover that All-Star magic with the team that first believed in him.
For fans of the game—and of classic baseball narratives—this is one story worth following. Heim's journey from Oakland to Texas, then Atlanta, and back again is a reminder that in baseball, you never know when you'll get another chance to write your next chapter.
