Former Manchester United assistant coach Rene Meulensteen has dropped a bombshell verdict on Joshua Zirkzee, urging the struggling striker to leave Old Trafford this summer. In an exclusive chat with Stretty News, the 62-year-old—who served under Sir Alex Ferguson from 2007 to 2013—didn't mince words about the Dutch forward's future.

Zirkzee, 24, arrived at United in the summer of 2024 for £36.5 million, fresh off an impressive stint at Bologna that had fans buzzing. Signed by compatriot Erik ten Hag, the versatile attacker was expected to add firepower to the Red Devils' frontline. But two seasons later, his Old Trafford story has been anything but smooth. Currently struggling for minutes under Michael Carrick, Zirkzee has become more of a bit-part player than a regular starter.

Despite his limited role, the United faithful have taken a liking to the striker. His slick touch, positive attitude, and relentless work rate—chasing down every ball across the pitch—have made him a fan favorite. Recent reports even suggested Zirkzee might be willing to stay and fight for his place beyond this season.

Meulensteen, however, believes that would be a costly mistake. "Zirkzee never really planted his position in his performances and everything he's done," the former coach explained. "He's a bit of a bit-part player, and I think for other clubs he can be of far more value. He's obviously done well when he played in Italy, and he played every game. For a young player like him, that is what you want to do."

The message from Meulensteen is clear: sitting on the bench at United won't help Zirkzee's career. "They're all ahead of him," he added, pointing to the fierce competition for places at the club. "I would definitely ask my agent to scan the market and see what's out there."

For a player who thrived as a regular starter in Serie A, the advice comes as a wake-up call. Zirkzee's talent is undeniable, but at a club stacked with attacking options, finding consistent game time is an uphill battle. Whether he heeds Meulensteen's warning or digs in his heels at Old Trafford remains to be seen—but one thing's for sure: the clock is ticking on his next move.
