Byron Scott says the Lakers must move on from LeBron James to build around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves for a real championship future in 2026-27.

Former Lakers coach and two-time NBA champion Byron Scott isn't holding back when it comes to LeBron James and the future of the Los Angeles Lakers. Appearing on the Brown Bag Mornings podcast, Scott made a bold pitch: it's time for the King to move on so the next generation can take the throne.

"You getting paid $50 million. You're 41, 42, 43 years old, right?" Scott said, pointing directly at the math that's hard to ignore. For Scott, the Lakers' championship window isn't about LeBron's legendary past—it's about building around the young stars already in the building.

"You got to build around Luka Doncic, Austin Reaves," Scott explained. "You can't do that if he's still here. You can go get two really good basketball players."

Scott's reasoning comes down to cold, hard cap space. LeBron's $59.5 million cap hold is a massive anchor on the Lakers' ability to upgrade their roster. Meanwhile, Doncic is locked in at $49.8 million, and Reaves at $20.9 million—a solid core that leaves little room for depth if LeBron stays. Scott doubts that a top-heavy trio of LeBron, Luka, and Reaves can outlast deeper teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder in a seven-game series.

LeBron became an unrestricted free agent after the 2025-26 season, where he still averaged an impressive 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game at age 41. But for Scott, the numbers on the stat sheet don't outweigh the numbers on the salary cap.

Scott even floated a sentimental alternative: LeBron heading back to Cleveland for one final curtain call. A farewell homecoming season in 2026-27 could be the perfect ending for a player who already delivered a title to the Cavaliers.

For Lakers fans, Scott's message is clear—sometimes the toughest moves are the ones that set up the biggest wins. Whether LeBron stays or goes, the Lakers' front office has a defining decision ahead.
