Former professional footballer Joey Barton has pleaded not guilty to charges of assault following an alleged incident at a golf club in Merseyside. The 43-year-old ex-midfielder, known for his playing career with clubs like Manchester City, Newcastle United, and Rangers, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court for a plea hearing.

Barton and a co-defendant, 50-year-old Gary O'Grady, are jointly charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent. The alleged victim is reported to be 51-year-old former non-league football manager Kevin Lynch. The incident is said to have occurred at the Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on March 8th.

Following the hearing, Barton was remanded into custody. A seven-day trial has been scheduled, set to begin on September 1st. This case adds another chapter to the controversial post-playing career of Barton, whose time on the pitch was often as noted for its intensity as his technical skill.
