Former professional footballer Joey Barton has pleaded not guilty to a serious assault charge stemming from an incident at a golf club in Merseyside. The 43-year-old ex-midfielder, known for his lengthy career with clubs like Manchester City, Newcastle United, and Rangers, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court for a hearing.

Barton and a co-defendant, 50-year-old Gary O'Grady, are jointly accused of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent on Kevin Lynch, a 51-year-old former non-league football manager. The alleged altercation occurred on March 8th at the Huyton and Prescot Golf Club.

Following the hearing, Barton was remanded into custody. He had previously been denied bail at a magistrates' court. A seven-day trial for the case is now scheduled to begin on September 1st.
