Former Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders made headlines when he returned to campus on May 2 for the university's graduation ceremony, with official social media posts suggesting he was "securing his degree." However, the school has since clarified that the young signal-caller hasn't actually graduated yet.
According to a statement from Colorado athletics, Sanders participated in the spring commencement ceremony as a guest—a common practice for students who are on track to graduate but still need to complete coursework. "Shedeur completed the requisite number of credits to participate in the spring commencement ceremony on May 2, which is an opportunity available to all CU students who similarly qualify," the statement said. Colorado athletics spokesman Steve Hurlbert confirmed this means he has not yet obtained his degree, adding, "This is extremely common, not just for student-athletes but for many students who want to be a part of the spring commencement ceremony but who might be finishing their courseload in the summer or even following fall."
It remains unclear when Sanders plans to officially graduate. The son of Colorado coach Deion Sanders left campus last year after being selected by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round of the NFL draft. As he continues his professional career, the timeline for completing his degree remains open—but for now, the celebration was just a bit premature.
