Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko brought plenty of optimism—and a few candid updates—to the Dallas A&M Club on Wednesday night for the season's first Coach's Night appearance. With his third season on the horizon, Elko addressed a roster fresh off spring ball and buzzing with potential, though not without its early hurdles.
The biggest concern? A serious lower-body injury to senior linebacker Daymion Sanford, suffered just before halftime of the Maroon & White Game. As one of the Aggies' most vital starters, Sanford is expected to miss at least the first half of the 2026 season. It's a tough break, but Elko and his staff are leaning on their depth to weather the storm. "We're confident we'll get Daymion back playing really good football this fall," Elko said, acknowledging the prayers and support flowing in from Aggie Nation.
Despite the setback, the mood in Dallas was upbeat. Elko noted that while expectations remain high in College Station, national attention has been relatively quiet—especially compared to rival Texas. That suits Elko just fine. "I enjoy flying under the radar," he hinted, knowing his team has the pieces to surprise.
Much of that pressure falls on redshirt junior quarterback Marcel Reed, who enters his second full season as the starter. The Tennessee native has the keys to an offense that Elko hopes can power the Aggies back to the College Football Playoff. To support that mission, Elko has elevated several coaches from within: wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins steps up as offensive coordinator, Lyle Hemphill takes over as defensive coordinator, and offensive analyst Joey Lynch moves into the quarterbacks coach role. "I trust this staff," Elko said, signaling his belief that continuity will pay off.
As summer workouts begin, Aggie fans have plenty to watch—and plenty to wear. Whether you're rallying behind Marcel Reed or sending good vibes to Daymion Sanford, gear up for the season ahead with the latest Texas A&M apparel. Gig 'em!
