In a rivalry that's quietly reshaping Wisconsin high school basketball, Iowa State head coach TJ Otzelberger has delivered a series of recruiting blows to Greg Gard and the Wisconsin Badgers that's hard to believe—six top in-state talents have chosen the Cyclones over the home-state Badgers since 2021.
The latest miss came with Donovan Davis, a standout from Freedom, Wisconsin, who became the sixth native son to commit to Iowa State under Otzelberger. That list includes Tyrese Hunter (Racine), Milan Momcilovic (Pewaukee), Jamarion Batemon (Milwaukee), Xzavion Mitchell (Oshkosh), and Usef Gray (West Allis).
It's worth noting the personal connection: Otzelberger is a Milwaukee native who played at Saint Thomas More. That hometown edge, combined with Iowa State's rising program, has proven tough for Gard to counter.
NIL opportunities undoubtedly play a major role in these decisions, but the trend signals a deeper issue. Gard has struggled to even stay competitive in some of these recruiting battles, and until that changes, Wisconsin's best homegrown talent may keep heading elsewhere. And this list doesn't even include other notable in-state players like Patrick Baldwin Jr., Kon Knueppel, Dooney Johnson, or Seth Trimble—all of whom chose programs outside Madison.
For Badgers fans, it's a frustrating pattern. For the Cyclones, it's a blueprint for building a program on Badger State talent. Either way, this is a recruiting war worth watching closely.
