Everton should have got penalty for Fernandes handball - Webb

Premier League referees' chief Howard Webb has admitted that Everton should have been awarded a penalty in the 2-1 defeat at West Ham.

In a candid admission that has reignited the debate over VAR consistency in the Premier League, referees' chief Howard Webb has confirmed that Everton were wrongly denied a penalty during their 2-1 defeat to West Ham last month. The controversial moment occurred in the 84th minute, with the Toffees trailing 1-0, when West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes made contact with the ball using his hand during a physical tussle with Everton's Thierno Barry.

Speaking after the match, Everton manager David Moyes did not hold back his frustration. "He punched the ball," Moyes said. "It would have been harsh, but I'm amazed they haven't given it." The incident was reviewed by VAR official Michael Salisbury, who decided not to intervene, citing that Fernandes had "accidentally handled the ball while grappling with an opponent."

However, on the latest episode of Match Officials Mic'd Up, Webb offered a starkly different assessment. "From the outset, I want to say we think a penalty should've been awarded here against Fernandes," Webb stated. He acknowledged that the midfielder likely did not intend to deliberately handle the ball, but emphasized that the movement of Fernandes' arm was a decisive factor. "He doesn't make himself unnaturally bigger here. He moves his arm forward. I think he's probably trying to prevent the attacker from turning him. But in doing that, he kind of bats the ball away."

Webb further explained that while Fernandes may not have been able to see the ball, his awareness of its location and his deliberate arm motion warranted a penalty. "He can't even see the ball, but Fernandes knows more or less where the ball is, and it's a deliberate action with his arm, probably not to handle the ball, but to do something. And therefore, I think we've given Fernandes way too much benefit of the doubt here. In this situation, a penalty would've been the right outcome."

This admission adds to the growing scrutiny of VAR protocols and their application in high-stakes Premier League matches. For Everton, the missed call proved costly, as they were unable to salvage a point from a game that could have shifted momentum in their season. As the debate over handball rulings continues, fans and players alike will be watching closely to see if such errors lead to changes in how these decisions are made on the pitch.
