An Everton fan is arrested by Merseyside Police during his side's match with Manchester City for allegedly racially abusing Antoine Semenyo.

In a troubling incident at Monday's Premier League clash between Everton and Manchester City, a 71-year-old fan has been arrested for allegedly directing racist abuse towards City forward Antoine Semenyo. The match, which ended in a thrilling 3-3 draw at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, was marred by the incident that saw swift action from both stewards and fellow supporters.

Merseyside Police confirmed that the suspect, a Nottinghamshire resident, was taken into custody on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence. He has since been released on bail with strict conditions, including a ban from entering within one mile of any designated sports stadium from four hours before kick-off until four hours after the final whistle.

This isn't the first time Semenyo has faced such abuse this season. The 26-year-old Ghana international, who joined City from Bournemouth for £65m in January, previously reported similar treatment during Bournemouth's 4-2 defeat at Liverpool in the opening match of the campaign. Following that incident, Semenyo called for stronger measures to combat racism in football, including potential prison sentences for offenders.

Everton responded swiftly and firmly, releasing a statement declaring that "behaviour of this nature will not be tolerated." The club emphasized its zero-tolerance approach, stating: "Racism and discrimination in all forms are completely unacceptable. They have no place in our stadia, our sport or in society."

Manchester City also expressed their disappointment, noting that England defender Marc Guehi, 25, was subjected to online racist abuse following the match. The club praised the "swift action" taken by Everton and Merseyside Police, while reiterating their commitment to supporting players affected by such incidents.

As the investigation continues, this incident serves as a stark reminder that football's battle against racism remains ongoing, with clubs, authorities, and players united in demanding change both on and off the pitch.
