The Evansville Thunderbolts have etched their name into SPHL history, and there's no debating their place among the league's elite. Over the weekend, the fifth-seeded Thunderbolts pulled off a stunning comeback, defeating the top-seeded Peoria in a five-game series to capture the President's Cup for the second consecutive season. After falling behind 2-0 in the series, Evansville rallied to clinch the championship on enemy ice with a decisive stand in the final period of Game 5.
This repeat title places the Thunderbolts in an exclusive club—only three other teams in the SPHL's 20-plus-year history have achieved back-to-back championships. "Let's get real," said head coach Jeff Bes. "It's so hard to do. Sometimes, after you win the first one, you get a little bit of entitlement. We fought that all season. My expectations were higher. Then, come playoff time, they were there. Everybody bought into what we wanted to be successful. Having that belief is what shows if you can compete and you can win."
How did Evansville complete what might be the best season in franchise history? They embraced the underdog role. That mindset carried over from last year's championship run, when the Thunderbolts rolled through the playoffs as a seventh seed to win their first Cup. Despite a strong regular season—posting 69 points and finishing fourth, both franchise bests—few expected a repeat performance. The team was just one victory shy of matching the 2022-23 squad's 32 wins.
The road to glory was anything but easy. Evansville needed overtime in Game 3 of the opening round against Pensacola, rallying from a two-goal deficit late in regulation at Ford Center. They then dispatched Roanoke in four games during the semifinals. The ultimate test came after dropping the first two games at Peoria nearly two weeks ago, setting the stage for a historic comeback.
"Everyone said (last year) was a fluke," said captain Matthew Hobbs. "There was a lot on the line for us. To prove to everybody that we earned it last year and earned it again this year. We're making something good here. We proved to everybody that this trophy is ours."
