In a moment that felt scripted for Hollywood, Esteban Ocon has described Alpine's stunning double-podium finish at the 2024 Brazilian Grand Prix as the perfect farewell to his time with the French team. It was a race that defied all expectations and provided a fitting end to a partnership filled with both triumph and tension.
The rivalry between Ocon and his then-teammate Pierre Gasly is the stuff of motorsport legend. From childhood karting days in France, their friendship evolved into one of Formula 1's most intense personal competitions. While they maintained professionalism during their two seasons together at Alpine in 2023 and 2024, there were moments when the heat of battle spilled over—most notably their collisions at the Australian and Monaco Grands Prix. But all that drama melted away in the Brazilian rain.
"It's a good closing chapter to the Alpine story," Ocon reflected in a video alongside his new Haas teammate Ollie Bearman. "There was no better way to close it than that. We've lived so many things with Pierre together, and to be on top of the motorsport world—it's not a win, but it's a podium together. It's incredibly special with probably one of the slowest cars on the grid at the time."
The transformation was nothing short of remarkable. Just the day before, in dry conditions, Ocon languished in P17. But when the São Paulo sky opened up, everything changed. "We woke up at 5:00 in the morning. The weather was playing a lot and I qualified fourth," he recalled. "I was leading the race for 15 or 20 laps, which was unexpected to say the least."
Yet even in this moment of triumph, the fierce competitor inside Ocon couldn't help but wonder what might have been. "To finish on the podium was so unexpected that I didn't fight for the win so hard, which is a bit of a regret of mine," he admitted. "There was one opportunity to score a podium that year, and that was the one—I didn't want to bin it. But if I was able to fight a little bit more during the year, maybe I would have fought Max [Verstappen] a bit harder because there was a chance of actually winning the race."
In the end, Ocon settled for second place, with Gasly completing the dream result in third. "Deep inside me, it didn't feel complete," he confessed. "There was something a little bit more to play, but still an amazing result—and good that we both managed to be on the podium." For a team that had struggled all season, this rainy day in Brazil was a reminder that in motorsport, as in life, the most memorable endings often come when you least expect them.
