SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — This weekend, students had the chance to compete in an esports competition at Briar Cliff University in town.

Six regional district schools entered, like Briar Cliff University, Morningside University, Concordia University, Doane University, Northwestern University and Waldorf University, all competing to test their skills on the screen.

They played games such as Super Smash Bros., Overwatch, Valiant and Rocket League

Organizers say around 80 students were at the competition today.

“[The students] compete online for the regular season. The regular season for each game has been going on for about three months. At this point. All the seeding we do is based solely on the results from that. You know, we all play against each other every week from the comfort of our own homes or the comfort of our universities,” said Mike Velez, an organizer.

An esports competitor says he’s spent a lot of time preparing for this event.

“I had to put in a lot of hours… I had to put in a lot of death matches, and it took a lot of hours. I think I had to send a chair for at least seven to eight hours a day,” said Gael Almonacid. “I had to get to a high rank and prove that I’m one of the best players here.”

Esport was added to the university’s athletic program in 2021.
