The Boston Celtics have reportedly positioned themselves as potential suitors for Giannis Antetokounmpo, but ESPN's Bobby Marks warns they should only pull the trigger under one critical condition.
According to NBA insider Shams Charania, the Milwaukee Bucks plan to ask Antetokounmpo to sign an extension this summer—and he's expected to decline. With just one year left on his contract, the Bucks would have little choice but to explore trade options, and the Celtics were already in the mix before the February deadline.
But here's the catch: Marks argues that Boston should only pursue the two-time MVP if he commits to a long-term extension. "Would the Celtics spit up Tatum or Brown if there is no assurance Antetokounmpo will extend his deal during the regular season?" Marks wrote. "The answer should be a hard no considering Brown and Tatum have at least three years remaining on their contracts."
It's a logical stance. Trading away a core like Jaylen Brown—who would likely be the centerpiece of any deal—for just one season of Antetokounmpo would be a massive gamble. The duo of Brown and Jayson Tatum has already led Boston to two NBA Finals appearances and one championship. Breaking that up for a rental, even one as talented as Giannis, could backfire spectacularly.
Still, after a disappointing first-round exit, change may be on the horizon. Celtics president Brad Stevens hinted at needing more rim pressure, and Antetokounmpo would certainly deliver that. He checks nearly every box for a team looking to reload rather than rebuild.
The question is whether the Celtics are willing to risk their proven formula for a superstar who might not stay. As the summer trade rumors heat up, all eyes will be on Milwaukee—and on whether Giannis is ready to commit to a new home.
