ESPN reveals winner of Travis Hunter trade between Browns and Jaguars

There's a clear winner of this trade after the first year.

The 2025 NFL Draft saw a seismic shift when the Jacksonville Jaguars, desperate to secure a generational talent, traded a massive haul to the Cleveland Browns for the right to select Travis Hunter with the second overall pick. The move was fueled by the dream of Hunter becoming the NFL's next true two-way star, a lockdown cornerback and dynamic wide receiver rolled into one.

However, after a rookie season cut short by injury and a likely shift toward focusing primarily on cornerback, the early returns are in. According to ESPN's Seth Walder, there is already a decisive winner of this blockbuster deal: the Cleveland Browns.

Walder's analysis points to a simple truth in NFL economics: trading a future first-round pick to move up for a non-quarterback is a high-risk gamble. For the Jaguars to "win" the trade, Hunter would need to reach Pro Bowl levels at both positions—a historically tall order. The injury setbacks in his first year only made that path steeper.

Meanwhile, the Browns' front office is reaping immediate rewards. In exchange for moving down from No. 2 to No. 5, Cleveland acquired a treasure trove of assets: the 36th and 126th picks in the 2025 draft, plus Jacksonville's 2026 first-rounder (which ended up being the 24th overall selection).

Cleveland has already hit on those 2025 picks. Defensive tackle Mason Graham has solidified the interior line, while running back Quinshon Judkins flashed star potential in the backfield. Adding depth with Dylan Sampson at pick 126 gives the Browns three immediate contributors from the deal.

With the Jaguars' 2026 first-round pick still in their pocket, the Browns' haul is not yet complete. If they can land another impact player at a position of need—be it receiver, cornerback, or offensive line—this trade could be remembered as a masterclass in asset management, turning a single high pick into a foundation of young talent.
