While ranking the top off-season's in the ACC, ESPN leaves Clemson out of the top ten

ESPN has set the bar low for Clemson football heading into the 2026 season, and Tigers fans might want to brace themselves. In a recent ranking of every Power Five team's offseason performance, the network placed Clemson outside the top ten in the ACC—a notable snub for a program with such a storied history.

The criticism stems from a combination of key losses and a roster in transition. ESPN pointed to the departures of star quarterback Cade Klubnik, defensive standout Peter Woods, and offensive lineman Blake Miller as major blows. But the exodus doesn't stop there: Clemson lost three players to the first round of the NFL draft, two more on day two, and their longtime starting quarterback early on day three. In total, 11 starters either graduated or turned pro, and three more entered the transfer portal. That kind of turnover is bound to raise eyebrows.

On the flip side, the Tigers did make some moves. ESPN acknowledged the additions of Chris Johnson Jr., London Merritt, and Elliot Washington, but noted that the offseason isn't just about who you bring in—it's also about what you lose. Clemson's 19th-ranked recruiting class and increased portal activity show they're trying to adapt, but the network remains skeptical.

The coaching staff also saw a shakeup, with the return of former offensive coordinator Chad Morris. However, ESPN didn't shy away from highlighting the Luke Ferrelli saga and head coach Dabo Swinney's fiery response, which added to the drama. It's a reminder that this offseason has drawn more ridicule than any since 2008, when ESPN gave Swinney's hiring a D+. Back then, the Tigers defied expectations—and fans are hoping history repeats itself.

Whether you're stocking up on Clemson gear or just watching from the sidelines, this season promises to be a test of resilience for a program used to being on top.
