Darryn Peterson, a potential Pacers target in NBA Draft, may have an explanation for the cramps that set his season off course: 'I was going to die'

Darryn Peterson, the Kansas guard who could be a top-four pick in this year's NBA Draft, may finally have answers to the mysterious cramping issues that derailed his lone college season. Speaking with ESPN's Romana Shelburne, Peterson opened up about the condition that left him fearing for his health—saying at one point, "I was going to die."

Peterson entered the 2024-25 season as the No. 1 recruit in his class and the early favorite to be the No. 1 overall pick. But a full-body cramp during a preseason boot camp led by Kansas coach Bill Self set the stage for a turbulent year. He appeared in just 24 of the Jayhawks' 35 games and logged 30-plus minutes in only 13 of those contests. As the cramps persisted, so did his anxiety about experiencing another severe episode, which ultimately led him to ask out of games.

Now, with the NBA Draft Lottery and Combine kicking off this week, Peterson is still projected as a top-four selection. However, in a loaded draft class, he's no longer the consensus No. 1. BYU wing A.J. Dybantsa has emerged as the top prospect, while Duke forward Cameron Boozer and North Carolina forward Caleb Wilson are considered on similar footing with Peterson.

For the Indiana Pacers, who could land a top-four pick in Sunday's lottery, Peterson remains an intriguing target. His elite scoring ability and two-way potential were on full display before the cramping issues surfaced. If he can manage the condition moving forward, his draft stock could climb back to where it once was.

As the pre-draft process heats up, all eyes will be on Peterson's medical evaluations and how teams assess his long-term durability. For a player who was once seen as a can't-miss prospect, this week could be a defining moment in his journey to the NBA.
