The Houston Texans made a bold move in the 2026 NFL Draft, trading up to secure rookie offensive lineman Keylan Rutledge in the first round—a clear signal they expect him to be a Day 1 starter. But according to ESPN's Field Yates, Rutledge might not be the only rookie making waves for Houston this season.
Yates recently released his list of top 20 post-Day 1 prospects poised to contribute in 2026, and the first defensive name on the list is Ohio State defensive tackle Kayden McDonald—another player the Texans traded significant draft capital to acquire, moving up two spots to snag him.
McDonald enters the NFL with serious credentials. After a breakout 2025 season under Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia, he established himself as the top nose tackle in the class. While his three sacks last season show pass-rush potential, Yates emphasizes that McDonald's primary role in Houston's already dominant defense will be as a run-stuffing anchor. And with elite edge rushers Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter drawing constant double-teams, McDonald should have plenty of one-on-one opportunities to make plays.
A unanimous All-American, McDonald was the heart of Ohio State's defensive line during their undefeated regular season and College Football Playoff run. His stat line—65 tackles, nine tackles for loss, three sacks, and two forced fumbles—reflects the kind of disruptive presence that translates well to the NFL.
Since being drafted, McDonald hasn't shied away from high expectations, boldly stating that no player selected ahead of him is better. He'll get the chance to prove that by freeing up Anderson and Hunter to wreak havoc off the edge. As McDonald puts it, his job is simple: "Help the defensive ends, get them to second and long, get them to third and long, and let Will and Danielle do their thing."
For Texans fans, the 2026 season is shaping up to be one where both their first-round picks—Rutledge on offense and McDonald on defense—could be key pieces in the team's push for contention.
