ESPN's beloved "College GameDay" is set to kick off its 40th season with a double milestone that underscores its legendary status in college football. The iconic pregame show will celebrate both its 40th anniversary and its 500th road show on September 5, broadcasting live from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, ahead of Lane Kiffin's LSU debut against Clemson. This historic event was announced during ESPN's upfront presentation to advertisers on Tuesday.
The show's journey began on November 13, 1993, when it first hit the road from South Bend, Indiana, for a clash between No. 2 Notre Dame and top-ranked Florida State. Since then, "GameDay" has visited 82 schools across 39 states, even venturing to Ireland in 2024 for Florida State's season opener against Georgia Tech. This will mark the show's 15th visit to LSU, a testament to the Tigers' passionate fan base and electric game-day atmosphere.
Looking ahead, ESPN also confirmed that the September 12 show will originate from Austin, Texas, as Ohio State and Texas meet for the third consecutive season. Last year's season opener in Columbus saw the Buckeyes edge out Texas 14-7, a game that also marked the final regular-season appearance for longtime analyst Lee Corso.
"Opening 'College GameDay's' 40th season with our 500th show on the road is one of those moments that puts the show's history into perspective," said Matt Garrett, ESPN's vice president of production.
