Change is in the air for Marysville Vikings basketball. After seven seasons at the helm, head coach Erik Schunk has decided to step down, passing the torch to a familiar face within the program, assistant coach Ben Davidson.

For Schunk, a 2001 Marysville graduate who has dedicated 19 years to coaching, the decision was driven by family. With a young daughter beginning her own athletic journey, he felt it was time to shift his focus from the sidelines to the stands. "I'm blessed to be able to have a daughter and I don't want to miss any of that," Schunk said, reflecting on a tenure that saw the Vikings capture a MAC Silver/Bronze championship in 2021.

Stepping into the lead role is Ben Davidson, a rising star in the local coaching ranks. Hired on April 15, Davidson is no stranger to the Vikings' system, having served as an assistant under Schunk last season. "It's a super great opportunity," Davidson said. "I'm just ready to get to work."

Davidson brings a fresh perspective deeply rooted in the Blue Water Area's basketball scene. A standout player at St. Clair High School and a five-year contributor at Ferris State University, he immediately transitioned into coaching at his alma mater before joining Marysville. This blend of recent high-level playing experience and local knowledge positions him uniquely to connect with the next generation of Vikings.

"He connects so well with the kids," Schunk noted, expressing full confidence in his successor. "He's the right person to take it where it needs to go." As the program turns the page, the community will be watching closely to see how Davidson's energy and modern philosophy shape the future of Marysville basketball.
