This season hasn't gone to plan for Liverpool. Fresh off a Premier League title triumph, expectations were sky-high for the 2025/26 campaign, but the Reds have struggled to match that form. Early exits from the Champions League and domestic cups have left the season fizzling out, with the fight for a top-four league finish now the primary focus.

Once the final whistle blows, attention will swiftly turn to a crucial summer rebuild. With new sporting director Richard Hughes and head coach Arne Slot at the helm, the midfield is expected to be a key area for reinforcement. Reports suggest current options like Curtis Jones and Alexis Mac Allister could make way for new, transformative talent.

That talent appears to be Adam Wharton. The 22-year-old England international, who rose to prominence at Crystal Palace after a move from Blackburn Rovers, has become one of the most sought-after midfielders in the league. His composure on the ball, tactical intelligence, and ability to dictate play have not only solidified his place at Selhurst Park but also earned him a spot in Gareth Southgate's Euro 2024 squad.

According to reports, Liverpool's recruitment team has done its homework and sees Wharton as the ideal anchor for their future—a player capable of controlling the tempo and progressing the ball under pressure. The feeling is reportedly mutual, with Wharton said to be open to a return to the North West.

Securing his signature, however, will require a club-record investment. Crystal Palace is expected to demand a fee in the region of £70 million, which would surpass the amount Arsenal paid for Eberechi Eze. For Liverpool, after a season where a significant £450 million spend hasn't yielded the desired progress, investing in a foundational piece like Wharton could be the decisive move to revitalize a midfield in need of fresh leadership and steer the club back toward the pinnacle of English football.
