England have shaken up their Test squad with a mix of fresh faces and a familiar comeback, as they prepare to face New Zealand at Lord's starting June 4. The team, looking to bounce back from a disappointing Ashes campaign, has recalled veteran seamer Ollie Robinson after a two-year international exile and handed first call-ups to three uncapped players: Emilio Gay, James Rew, and Sonny Baker.

The 32-year-old Robinson, who boasts an impressive Test record of 76 wickets at an average under 23 from 20 matches, was once seen as the natural successor to legends Stuart Broad and James Anderson. However, fitness issues—including back injuries in his last two Tests—saw him dropped after the 2024 tour of India. Now, with the recent retirements of Broad, Anderson, and Chris Woakes, England's pace attack is in rebuilding mode, and Robinson's return could provide the leadership they desperately need.

As expected, opener Zak Crawley has been left out for the first time since captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum took charge in 2022, following a poor tour of Australia. His likely replacement is Durham's Emilio Gay, 26, a specialist left-handed opener who edges out fellow newcomer James Rew, 22, for the spot. Meanwhile, spinner Shoaib Bashir, who was overlooked during the entire Ashes series, has been named in the squad and will compete with leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed, who could make his first home Test appearance.

In a significant off-field move, England have appointed Australian Marcus North as the new national selector. The Durham director of cricket replaces Luke Wright, who stepped down after the Ashes for personal reasons, and becomes the first foreigner to chair England's selection panel. This fresh perspective could be just what the team needs as they look to turn the page and build for the future.
