Pittsburgh Pirates fans got a much-needed boost on Thursday as Endy Rodriguez made his long-awaited return to the Major Leagues for the first time since June 2025. The young catcher didn't disappoint, going 2-for-3 with a double and a two-run single to help lift the Pirates to a 7-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies.
While Ryan O'Hearn continued his hot streak—going 3-for-4 with his seventh home run of the season, pushing his average to .299—and both Konnor Griffin and Jared Triolo chipped in with two hits apiece, the spotlight was firmly on Rodriguez. His performance was a bright spot in what has been a challenging journey back to the big leagues.
Once regarded as one of the top prospects in Pittsburgh's farm system, Rodriguez carried high expectations from both the organization and its fans. However, elbow injuries have plagued him since 2024, leaving his future in question. Thursday's game, where he also handled catching duties, offered a glimpse of the potential that made him a standout in the first place.
His return couldn't come at a better time for the Pirates. The catching position has been a weak spot offensively, with Henry Davis hitting just .151 with two homers and Joey Bart posting a .259 average with only two homers while battling injuries. Adding Rodriguez's bat to the lineup could provide a significant boost, making an already dangerous offense even more formidable.
ESPN recently named the Pirates as one of six teams capable of beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in a series, citing their pitching depth and the ability to deploy ace Paul Skenes twice in a series. While Pittsburgh's starting rotation remains its greatest strength, the offense is quietly making noise. The Bucs are currently tied for fourth in the MLB in runs scored—even ahead of the Dodgers. If Rodriguez can recapture even a fraction of his former promise, and if the team can start producing consistently from the catcher spot, the Pirates could become a nightmare matchup in a playoff series.
Bucs fans, how are you feeling about having Endy back? Let us know in the comments!
