It's still April, but Elly De La Cruz and Sal Stewart have Cincinnati Reds fans thinking about which player might become the first in franchise history with 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases.

De La Cruz, who has 10 homers and 8 stolen bases, currently is on pace for 55 homers and 44 stolen bases. Stewart, who has 9 home runs and 7 stolen bases, is on pace for 50 homers and 40 steals.

Outfielder Eric Davis came close to a 40-40 season in 1987, hitting 37 homers and stealing 50 bases in just 129 games.

The two other players in Reds history with 30-30 seasons are Brandon Phillips in 2007 (30 home runs, 32 steals) and Barry Larkin in 1996 (33 homers, 36 stolen bases).

The six players in MLB history with a 40–40 season are José Canseco, Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez, Alfonso Soriano, Ronald Acuña Jr. and Shohei Ohtani.

Ohtani was the most recent to do it, in 2024, and the only player with a 50–50 season.
