When a loan move goes this wrong, it's hard to know where to point the finger. Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has called Harvey Elliott's wasted season at Villa Park "embarrassing for everyone involved" — and it's hard to argue with him.
The 23-year-old Liverpool midfielder arrived on a season-long loan with high hopes. The deal included a £35 million obligation to buy if Elliott made 10 Premier League appearances. So far, he's managed just four. His total league minutes? A mere 109. To put that in perspective, that's barely more than a single full match all season.
Elliott's only league start came way back in September against Fulham — and he was hooked at halftime. He hasn't featured in the Premier League since February. Villa even tried to send him back to Anfield in January, but the two clubs couldn't find common ground.
"To now explain about the reason for this decision is very difficult, or it is easy, but it is not the moment," Emery said, clearly frustrated. "My apologies for Harvey Elliott are, every day, in my mind. We have our responsibility and Liverpool have their responsibility. How the season has gone has been difficult."
The timing couldn't be more awkward. Liverpool travel to Villa Park on Friday in a massive clash — the winner books a Champions League spot for next season. Elliott won't be able to play against his parent club, but he'll be watching from the sidelines, wondering what could have been.
This is a player who lit up Euro 2025 with England's Under-21s, scoring five goals and winning Player of the Tournament. He joined Villa hoping to force his way into the senior England squad for the World Cup. Instead, his U21 teammate Elliot Anderson has won seven senior caps and become a regular under Thomas Tuchel.
There's still interest from clubs in both the Premier League and Europe, but one thing seems clear: Elliott's future won't be at Liverpool under Arne Slot. For a player of his talent, the next move needs to be the right one — because this season has been a painful reminder that opportunity doesn't always knock twice.
