Missouri football fans got a long-awaited update on star running back Ahmad Hardy's condition this week, and while the news is cautiously optimistic, the timeline for his return remains uncertain.
Head coach Eli Drinkwitz addressed Hardy's status for the first time since the incident during a Mizzou 'Zou to You' caravan stop in Dallas on Tuesday evening. The update comes nearly a week after Hardy was shot in the upper leg while leaving a concert in Laurel, Mississippi, in the early hours of May 11.
Hardy, who led the SEC in rushing during the 2025 season, underwent surgery at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg before being discharged and returning to Columbia to begin his rehabilitation process at the Missouri Orthopedic Institute.
"He's back in MOI, and he's working on a recovery," Drinkwitz told event emcee Mike Kelly, as captured in a video posted to X by Dallas Morning News sports producer Nate Sanchez. "The timetable for that recovery is not determined. We'll take it day by day."
The coach emphasized that Hardy's health comes first, noting the delicate nature of recovery for elite athletes. "Getting back healthy and getting back to elite status is always a little bit tricky in some of these situations," Drinkwitz explained.
When pressed on whether Hardy could return to the field this season, Drinkwitz offered a balanced perspective. "There is an opportunity that he could be back this year. There's an opportunity he couldn't be back this year. We won't know those answers for a few weeks."
For now, the Tigers are rallying around their star back. "He's got the full support of MU Health Care, and he's got the full support of our team as we continue to help him recover and work it day by day," Drinkwitz added.
The message is clear: Hardy's long-term health is the priority, and while a return to the gridiron this season isn't off the table, fans will need to be patient as the recovery process unfolds. For a program that relies heavily on its ground game, every update on Hardy's progress will be closely watched by the Mizzou faithful.
